    Why use a shower bench?

Installing a medical shower bench is a good solution when you want to adapt the bathroom of an elderly person who is losing their independence or a person with reduced mobility.

In a shower with a bench:

    • the person can wash while seated,
    • the risk of falling is reduced,
    • access to the shower is easier,
    • if the bench has handles, which is normally the case with PRM benches for bathrooms, getting up is easier and less risky.

A carer can also help a senior citizen more easily with a shower transfer bench than with a shower chair, on which the elderly person cannot ‘slide’ to move around. Feel free to take a look at our different models if you prefer a shower bench with a backrest. Browse our other accessories and devices for senior citizens or people with disabilities.

Key features of a medical shower bench

If you are looking for a bench for the bathroom of a dependent elderly person, in addition to handles for standing up, you will of course need non-slip feet and, ideally, a padded seat for greater comfort.

Remember to check the maximum weight that the shower bench can support. Our Honolulu model has a record weight capacity of 253 kg. This is the weight supported by bariatric seats for the bathroom.

Please note that there are two main categories of models: foldable or flip-up shower benches, which are fixed to the wall like a retractable shower seat, and shower benches that stand on four legs. The latter can be useful elsewhere in the bathroom. For even more safety, take a look at our shower and bath accessories.

What size should a shower bench be?

Shower benches have the advantage of being wider than shower seats. But first, let's look at the height of a shower bench for people with reduced mobility, which must be adjustable. A good height is between 40 and 50 centimetres. For seating comfort, the depth can vary from 30 to 50 cm depending on the manufacturer. A wall-mounted shower bench is never very deep, but it has the advantage of being foldable. As for the width, we recommend at least 50 cm.

How do you install a shower bench?

If you choose a wall-mounted shower bench, attaching it to the wall with screws is relatively simple. Generally, a fold-down shower bench can be installed in 15 to 20 minutes if you have the right tools. The only thing to check before starting work, in some bathrooms, is the condition of the wall.

If you don't want to drill into the walls or are unable to do so, opt for a removable shower bench. An inexpensive stainless steel or aluminium shower bench can be useful in the bathroom, but also in other rooms. Thanks to their design and non-slip feet, shower benches for disabled people are extremely stable.
